jury duty

Last year I was summoned for jury duty during the first week of school.
That would have been insane, so I deferred to August
when I knew I would be done with my summer classes.
Well, Monday I showed up at 8am.
By 9am I had been assigned a judge.
The rest of the day was spent narrowing us down.
I got to go back a second day...
and by 10am I was officially a juror.
Out of 75 people sent to the judge.
Lucky me...

Now I get to wear this badge everywhere
so people don't talk about cases in front of me.
The courtroom is in Pioneer Square, so I get a lot of advice
about being a juror from people sitting on street corners.
Today I got to watch a crazy man dance in front of the bus.
I also usually get to see someone's butt.
You would be surprised at how many people don't seem to notice
when their butts are completely exposed.
They just walk around like it's no big deal.
Basically I am learning a lot.

Aside from lunch we have to take all our breaks in a special room,
so I try to stock up on snacks.
Mostly candy.
I must be feeling sorry for myself and this is my present.

Today I started making sculptures with the office supplies.
Being a juror is just so exciting!
I am learning so much!

Ok I am sure you are detecting some sarcasm.
Basically I just lost what little summer vacation I had.
I am just a tiny bit bitter.

Things do get interesting when I'm actually in the courtroom, though.
And my fellow jurors are really nice!
One of them is 88 years old and he is the cutest old man in the world.
Another one has a son who will be a student at my school this year!
Small world.

The hardest part is I can't talk to ANYONE,
not even my fellow jurors, about the case.
It will HOPEFULLY end after next week,
so then I can spill the beans.
For now, expect more stories about my new friends in Pioneer Square.
And for fun, some of my favorite jury-related clips:

  1. oh... unlucky you! what a super non.fun thing to do during the summer. i've got called twice, both times I was selected but was able to convince the judge I was not fit to be a juror :) Although I do think it would interesting to be a juror for a 1 day case just to see how things work.
